Who is Spectre?
Within a year of Superman's debut, DC Comics introduced Batman and Sandman. Shortly after, amidst a flood of colorful crimefighters, Superman creator Jerry Siegel crafted the first supernatural hero, Spectre. Illustrated by young artist Bernard Baily, Spectre's debut story appeared in More Fun Comics #52 in early 1940, marking a striking departure for young comic readers.
The story begins with tough cop Jim Corrigan attending a party celebrating his engagement to socialite Clarice Winston. Acting on a tip, Corrigan rushes to a nearby racecourse where local criminal "Gat" Benson and his gang are attempting a robbery. Corrigan single-handedly apprehends them, but an enraged Benson retaliates by kidnapping Corrigan, sealing him in a barrel filled with concrete, and tossing him into a river.
In true comic book fashion, death is hardly an obstacle for a hero's career. At the gates of Eternity, the voice of God informs Corrigan that his work isn't finished, and he is returned to Earth, where he dispatches the gang of crooks. This new "avenging Spectre" possesses nearly limitless powers, including a death stare that frightens criminals to literal death, mind-reading abilities, healing powers, immense size-shifting capabilities, and even time travel.
Sensing his newfound differences from other men, Corrigan breaks off his engagement and returns home to fashion himself a green-hooded costume. Over the next few years, Spectre instills fear in criminals everywhere and becomes a figure of horror himself. Effectively God's executioner, whether facing common thugs or exotic foes like Zor, the Blue Flame, Xmon, or the Black Doom, Spectre dispatches each adversary with chilling efficiency.
Love interest Clarice Winston makes regular appearances to provide someone for Spectre to rescue, though creators felt the character was becoming unsympathetic. After losing its cover spot in More Fun, attempts to humanize Spectre with the introduction of comic sidekick Percival Popp the Supercop only eroded the character's unique appeal, leading to its cancellation in 1945.

During the early 1940s, Spectre also served as a regular member of the Justice Society, but while many group members enjoyed successful revivals in the 1960s, Spectre remained conspicuously absent. After a fan campaign, the Spectral Avenger returned in three 1966 issues of Showcase Comics, leading to a regular series. To avoid the original incarnation's bloodthirsty persona, the new series emphasized Spectre's mystical side, resulting in a series of cosmic, psychedelic adventures. Yet, this Spectre lacked the emotional depth that made Marvel Comics superheroes popular until the horror-centric 1970s.
Legend has it that editor Joe Orlando, mugged in New York, envisioned a new Spectre who could exact vengeance he felt powerless to mete out. With horror writer Michael Fleisher and artist Jim Aparo on board, the new Spectre debuted in February 1974 in Adventure Comics #431 to a mix of acclaim and disbelief. Fleisher returned to Spectre's avenging roots, relishing imaginative ways to dispatch villains, such as turning a criminal into wood and sawing him, or skewering terrorists with giant protractors. Jim Corrigan himself became a chain-smoking, hard-boiled police detective akin to Dirty Harry, as cold as the grave.
From the start, fan reaction was divided; some appreciated the hard-hitting stories, while others viewed the strip as excessive in sadism. When DC executives learned of the controversy, they canceled the series despite promising sales. Fleisher and Aparo later had their vindication when the entire series was collected in a deluxe edition, including previously unpublished stories, transforming its initial shock value into classic status.
Recent years have seen three more series continuing where the 1970s series left off, with varying success. A successful run in the 1990s even daringly revived Percival Popp, the Super Cop. The latest post-millennium incarnation, since canceled, radically revived long-dead Green Lantern Hal Jordan as a gentler Spectre, the "Spirit of Redemption," with incarnations across the universe and nearly limitless power. Though confusing to some, it underscored Jerry Siegel's foresight in creating the character years ago.
